Employees expect an annual wage increase. Even though no one should be guaranteed a raise, the employees expect one. Not addressing this expectation can erode morale and productivity. By addressing wage increases, we blunt any criticism or morale problems that may erupt due to the sensitive nature of the subject. Ignoring employee expectations does not make the expectation go away. It is important to address the issue even if nothing can be done about it for that year. Addressing the expectation at least blunts the issue for a period of time, however, it does not make the issue disappear.
