Business systems generate data, informing owners and managers about business health and status. Forms, records, files and reports all document the progress of the business. Data is collected according to internal policies and procedures used by the business to control its future.

To exist, businesses require only one ingredient - customers with money to buy the business's goods or services. Businesses design and implement controls as a result of planning. Businesses that conduct planning processes are usually more successful than business efforts that are unplanned. Lack of planning often results in business chaos and failure. It is more efficient and economical for a business to implement plans early on within its life-cycle.
